Cement resistors are the rectangular white blocks you've seen in every crossover, every amplifier protection circuit and every power supply since roughly the invention of the loudspeaker and there's a reason they've never been improved upon for the job.

Inside is a wound resistive element. Around it is a flame-proof ceramic case, packed with insulating cement. That construction does three useful things: it pulls heat out of the element and into the case, it insulates properly against the board and neighbouring components, and if the part ever does fail catastrophically, it fails contained rather than dramatically.

Cement or wire wound?

Both are wound elements, the difference is the packaging and the winding. The cement type's rectangular case sheds heat well and sits flat and stable on a board, but the winding isn't non-inductive, so there's a small series inductance that our wire wound non-inductive series doesn't have.

In practice that means: for tweeter attenuation and anywhere in the high-frequency signal path, reach for the non-inductive wire wound. For Zobel networks, woofer-side damping, protection circuits and general high-current duty, the cement resistor is the right part and the more robust one. Don't let anyone sell you a "sound character" difference between the two, the difference is inductance and thermal packaging, and both are things you can design around.

Where they belong

Zobel and impedance compensation networks, woofer-side series damping, amplifier protection and bleed circuits, power supplies, and anywhere the part is going to spend its life warm.

Values are available from 1.8 Ohm up to 22 Ohm, covering everything from fine-tuning tweeter circuits through to midrange and woofer networks.

Power Rating: 10w

A note on power ratings: 10W is the rating with airflow, not buried in wadding. Mount them clear of the crossover board with a little breathing room and derate to about half in a sealed cabinet. In a tweeter L-pad on a domestic system you'll never trouble them; in a series woofer position on a hard-driven build, do the maths first.
