Amplifier FAQ

With the release of power amplifiers, we wanted to expand on how they came about and why we feel they are one of the best value amplifiers available in Australia.

The elephant in the room, Class D amplification.

Class D amplification has long been met with scepticism, often seen as efficient but lacking the warmth and fidelity of Class AB designs. However, with the introduction of Hypex’s Ncore technology, this perception has shifted dramatically.

Ncore technology addresses many of the shortcomings traditionally associated with Class D. It delivers ultra-low distortion and high linearity, resulting in cleaner, more accurate sound reproduction across the entire frequency spectrum. Unlike early Class D amplifiers that struggled with midrange and high-frequency clarity, Ncore amps produce a transparent, detailed sound comparable to, and often exceeding, Class AB designs.

Additionally, Ncore offers far greater efficiency, running cooler and drawing less power, making it ideal for high-power applications without compromising on audio performance. This combination of efficiency and "audiophile-grade" sound quality is why we believe Ncore-based Class D amplification surpasses traditional Class A/AB in many key areas.

But don't just take my word for it, see our table below comparing some of the higher end stereo power amplifiers on the market featuring Class A, A/B, G and H technology with our NAOS amplifier.

NAOS Amplifier A Amplifier B Amplifier C Amplifier D
Power Per Channel - 4Ω 250 watts 240 watts 400 watts 200 watts 250 watts
Power Per Channel - 8Ω 175 watts 160 watts 225 watts 100 watts 175 watts
Distortion (THD) 0.0018% 0.06% 0.2% 0.07% 0.03%
SNR 124db 112db 110db 110db 115db
Class Class D Class AB Class A & G Class AB Class G & H
Efficiency 92% Approx. 60% Approx. 75% Approx. 60% Approx. 70%
Weight TBC 12.2kg 18kg 26.9kg 27.3kg
Price TBC $4,499 $5,495 $12,999 $17,999

As highlighted above, even when compared to high-end amplifiers costing up to eight times more, our Hypex-powered NAOS amplifier delivers lower distortion, a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and far greater efficiency—all in a much more compact design.

What motivated us to offer Amplifiers?

Our motivation for offering power amplifiers is the same reason we began selling speaker cables back in 2018. Just like with cables, there's a lot of marketing hype, misleading specs, and exaggerated claims in the amplifier market. Putting together the comparison table wasn’t easy—many manufacturers advertise power ratings at high distortion levels, while showing distortion specs measured at very low power, which can make their products appear better on paper.

With our amplifiers, we stick to our "No BS" philosophy. All specs are not only realistic but often surpassed in real-world use. The modules used in our amplifiers have been tested both in-house and by independent parties, so you can trust that what you're getting performs exactly as promised.

You're buying direct from the manufacturer

One of the major advantages of buying direct, aside from bypassing third-party support, is the cost savings. In the audio industry, products often go through significant markups before reaching customers. Typically, manufacturers sell to distributors with a 30-50% markup, who then sell to retailers with an additional 20% markup. Retailers often add another 30% or more, leading to a total markup of over 130% by the time the product reaches you.

With us, our profit margins are on the lower end of the manufacturer scale, and we have no distributor or dealer network, meaning you get much better value for your money—fewer middlemen, much better pricing!

More on the Australian Made License for our amplifiers

Some of our amplifiers are proudly licensed as Australian Made, and in line with our "No BS" philosophy, we want to be fully transparent about what that entails.

First, we openly acknowledge that we import the amplifier modules and power supplies from Hypex in the Netherlands. We don’t have the capability to manufacture these components ourselves, and we wouldn’t pretend we could match their performance even if we tried.

What’s done in Australia is just about everything else. The chassis is manufactured locally by a metal fabricator just 40 minutes from us here in South Australia. We handle the full assembly, conduct all testing in-house, and ship each unit ourselves.

We also offer amplifiers that are not classified as "Australian Made" but still utilize Hypex modules. For these models, we import the cases and manage assembly and testing locally. While the performance is identical, a smaller portion of the production process occurs in Australia, so we chose not to apply for Australian Made certification for these products.

What does your testing entail?

Before shipping each amplifier, we assign a serial number and conduct thorough tests to ensure everything is functioning as it should. These tests include:

  • Power Output Verification: Ensuring the amplifier meets or exceeds its rated power output at both 4Ω and 8Ω loads.
  • Distortion Testing (THD): Measuring Total Harmonic Distortion at various power levels to confirm ultra-low distortion figures.
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): Testing for a high SNR to ensure quiet operation without background noise.
  • Frequency Response: Verifying the amplifier’s response across the full audio spectrum to ensure consistent performance.
  • Input/Output Functionality: Testing both XLR and RCA inputs for clean signal handling and verifying speaker outputs
  • Ground Loop/Noise Testing: Checking for any potential ground loop hum or other noise interference.

This information is kept on file and can be referenced in the event of queries or concerns.

Customer Support and Warranty

Another advantage of buying from us is the direct local support and warranty. Every amplifier comes with a 2-year warranty, and if you have any questions, you'll be in direct contact with me—the person who designed, assembled, and tested your unit.

In the rare event of an issue, you won’t have to deal with multiple contacts or third parties to arrange an inspection or repair. All inspections and repairs are handled by me personally. If testing confirms a manufacturing fault, the work is done at no cost to you, and we’ll cover all shipping costs as well.

What's on the horizon for your amplifier range?

Honestly, I haven’t been this excited about launching a product range since we kicked off NB Speaker Cables in 2018. We've got a lot of exciting designs in development, including the following:

  • Mono Amplifiers
  • Ultra High Powered Subwoofer Amplifiers with DSP
  • Multi-Channel Amplifiers from 3-8 channels
  • Multi-Channel Amplifiers with DSP for use in Active Speaker builds

From here, it’s all about finding the time and diving into the R&D process. In the meantime, we’re able to custom build a variety of combinations to meet some very specific needs. So, if you’re looking for something unique, feel free to reach out!

As always, we want to thank everyone that has bought from us over the years. Your support has made expanding our range possible!
